Part I: Career Navigation-Your Journey

Career development is not a point in time, it is a lifelong journey that takes many twists and turns, but we can take the wheel and determine our destiny along the way. This session will explore how to ask for what we want and need, how to think about career changes including timing, how to navigate your organization as you seek to advance, and who and how to influence to achieve your goals along the way.

Founder, Why Wait – Thrive Now Life Coaching

Since graduating from college Lorraine has held positions as a consultant in secret Information Technology for the US Navy and as an advertising executive for brands such as Cap’n Crunch cereal, McDonnell Douglas Aerospace, and Gatorade sports drink. While in Chicago, she founded a company to work with local banks to grow their revenues. Later, she developed national consumer marketing campaigns for AT&T.

Drawing on skills she learned as a teenager, Lorraine founded and ran a wholesale drapery workroom, delivering products to beautiful homes, from New York to Florida to California. Her draperies and designs have been featured in local and national magazines. She opened the Chicago Sub-Zero Wolf Showroom in 2011 and led it to become the highest lead-generating corporate showroom in North America. Beginning in 2017, she directed sales and operations for the Kohler Signature Stores in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Kansas City (Go Chiefs!). The Kohler Store she opened in Detroit, became a case study for its accelerated sales ramp and strongest new store culture to date.

All told, Lorraine has held leadership roles at 11 companies, including her three startups. Collectively totaling nine years, her service on boards of directors spans across three additional companies: one publicly held, one privately owned, and one not-for-profit. She is a co-founder of the Private Directors Association, a former marathon runner, and a private pilot.

In 2021 Lorraine founded Why Wait – Thrive Now, a coaching practice that helps professional women navigate complex career transitions so they can confidently plan for and wisely choose their next role, knowing it will be their best yet.

Lorraine lives in Naperville, Illinois with her husband Michael. They have two grown sons.

Kimberly Evans
Executive Vice President & Head of Corporate Sustainability, Inclusion and Social Impact

Kimberly Evans, is an Executive Vice President at Northern Trust. She was recently appointed the Head of Corporate Sustainability, Inclusion and Social Impact for the firm. This role is responsible for developing the enterprise strategies for ESG, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and Community Investing & Impact.

Prior to this role, she served as the North America Head of Private Capital Fund Services and previously led the Governmental, Sovereign Wealth, and Taft Hartley/Union pension and treasury business, in the US, Central and South America.

With over 25 years of experience, Kim has become a business transformation expert. Kim has developed, led, and executed business and change strategies for five financial services organizations, managed teams in six countries, and has implemented technical and organizational programs that have impacted over 39,000 financial services professionals throughout her career. She has also owned and operated businesses as an independent

consultant and as a franchise owner. Kim’s core expertise includes creating and executing business strategy, developing and maximizing talent, and ultimately driving change and transformation to make organizations competitive, effective and productive.

Kim graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and has earned numerous business, leadership, and technical certifications throughout her career.

Kim has been named one of the Iconic 22 from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – Chicago Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter, a 2021 Leader That Can from Schools That Can, one of the 50 Leading Women in the 2020 Hedge Fund Journal, a Chicago United 2019 Business Leader of Color Honoree, a Leading Women’s Executive Alumni, and a three-time Chairman’s Award

recipient. She was also recognized as a Leader in Philanthropy by the University of Chicago and currently serves on the board of the Chicago Public Education Fund (The Fund) which targets the development of principals within Chicago Public Schools (CPS). She is a distinctive member of C200, a powerful community of successful business women and the Economic Club of Chicago.

Holly Verdeyen, CEBS
Partner and US Defined Contribution and Financial Wellness Leader

Holly Verdeyen is a Partner in Mercer’s Chicago, IL office and serves as the Defined Contribution and Financial Wellness Leader in the US.

Holly has overall responsibility the strategy, development, and growth of Mercer’s defined contribution and financial wellness business within the US. In addition, she is responsible for solutions development and the deployment intellectual capital and research to our clients and the industry.

Holly has over 20 years of investment experience, and has held leadership roles in both the institutional and financial intermediary distribution channels. Holly is a member of our Wealth Leadership Team, US Investment Policy Committee, and Investments Inclusion and Diversity Advisory Committee.

Prior to joining Mercer, Holly worked at Russell Investments, where she led the US Institutional and Intermediary DC business units, which included investment consulting, traditional outsourced CIO, target date funds and managed accounts. Holly has previously held roles as a founding member of the Defined Contribution Group at UBS and on the Defined Contribution Team at Barclays Global Investors, now Blackrock.

Holly is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago. She serves as the Board President for the not-for-profit organization CAASE, and on the Advisory Council for the Women in Leadership Executive Program at The George Washington University.  Holly earned her MBA from Northwestern University and her Bachelor’s degree from St. Norbert College.  She holds a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation

Sara Wilson
Head of Americas Index Client Experience, FTSE Russell
London Stock Exchange Group

Based in Chicago, Sara Wilson is a member of the FTSE Russell Global Client Service Leadership Team within LSEG’s Global Customer Operations Division. As a deep domain expert for index data management and passive implementation, Sara works closely with key accounts and internal stakeholders, leading strategic initiatives aligned with client objectives to drive the business forward. In previous roles at FTSE Russell as well as Russell Investments and Morningstar, Sara held roles in Institutional Sales and Relationship Management with responsibility for a variety of regions and client segments. In other activities, Sara is currently pursuing an MBA at the University of Illinois Gies College of Business and is passionate about supporting women in finance through her involvement in the LSEG Women Inspired Network, Women Investment Professionals – Outreach Committee and Women in ETFs.
