Each year, WIP’s Trailblazer Award honors a woman who has inspired us through her personal and professional excellence. This year’s virtual event, attended by more than 200 WIP members and colleagues, celebrated Angela Miller-May, chief investment officer of the Chicago Teachers’ Pension Fund.
“Choose a blaze to trail,” quipped Ms. Miller-May in remarks filled with grace, humility, and good humor. She advised event attendees not to fear asking for what you want. A “yes” can be great, but a “no” can be a trigger for change — and change leads to opportunities. ”You never know when opportunities will present themselves,” she said.
An active WIP member since 2015, Ms. Miller-May described herself as “that woman who wants to keep the path lit for other women.” She has also long been an advocate for diversity and inclusion for minorities, as well as for women. As CIO at Chicago Teachers, she intentionally built an investment team with a diversity of gender, ethnicity, age, and experience. Importantly, she advised other employers to aim to identify and fill gaps in skill sets, focusing on whether interviewees can learn and be developed.
Congratulations once again, and well done!
